Yesterday afternoon was an interesting experience for us in this whole wedding planning process, and it involved our first go at registering. But, more on that later…
Yesterday morning actually started out wonderfully! One of my bridesmaids, Hannah, and I went to the Bridal salon where I got my dress to check out some bridesmaids dresses. It turned out to be a blast! The two of us together picked out quite a few dresses to try on. I had a general idea of a color and style that I wanted, so that helped going into the whole process. However, what was a little tricky for me was trying on dresses and having to picture what they’d look like in the color I was wanting. In the end, we had a blast and found a beautiful dress that all my bridesmaids and I loved! Here are some pictures of some of the wonderful dresses we tried on.

Now, back to what I was talking about earlier. Yesterday afternoon, after Conor go out of work, I wanted us to go register at one of the stores we had picked out. Obviously neither of us have done this before so we weren’t really sure what the whole process entailed. Let’s just say, it was far from what we expected.

There were a few set backs:
Setback #1- Like any groom I’m sure, Conor was having trouble understanding why we’d register for certain things. Such as, “we already have plates, why would we need a whole set of new ones?” Where then I had to constantly remind him that we have nothing that matches, and this is a nice chance for us to start our married life together with “grown up” things (aka matching plates, bowls, silverware instead of Mom’s hand-me-downs). He is so not materialistic at all, so this was a very difficult issue for him to get around.
Setback #2- We hadn’t eaten since breakfast, it was now 7:00pm. Hangry moments happened, they did. Luckily we never fought with each other, but were just hating shopping and scanning at that point.
Setback #3-We were very gracious for the wedding consultant helping us in the store, however, at the end we were so exhausted and confused we wound up finding ourselves feeling pressured into registering for things we didn’t really need.
Don’t get me wrong, the first half of our registering experience in the store was a blast, it was so much fun. But, after four hours we were exhausted, hangry, confused, and so ready to leave. I never thought I of all people would dislike shopping so much! By the end we realized we hadn’t come prepared for what we were doing and we were definitely over it. There was no speak of registry allowed the rest of the night (or at least until we had food in our bellies). Once we were settled in back home, I was thinking back on the whole experience and just kept thinking hoping that this would be funny to look back on down the road… right???
Once we can both actually stand hearing the words china, flatware, food processor, and 400, 600, ANY hundred threat count sheets we will give it another go in a different store!
We DID learn one specific thing from yesterdays experience though:
There’s no point in registering for things because it’s what a wedding consultant says that they’re items “most couples register for.” Because of this, I ended up actually deleting about half of the things we registered for yesterday, they were items that we felt pressured into scanning and didn’t represent us as a couple whatsoever.
This is a whole new experience for both of us, and we want it to be so special. We’re so privileged to have the opportunity to even put together a registry and to ask our amazing family and friends for gifts. We want to make sure that their money is well spent on items that we would be so gracious to receive and that will have a huge impact on our lives as Mr. and Mrs.
So… round one, a bust- but we will try again!
I was in tears laughing through this entire blog! I can just hear/picture you telling this story! Sounds like so much fun.
